All New Profile!
USC: A Great Place to Be!
University of South Carolina provides a diverse array of academic and extracurricular opportunities, making it a great fit for many students.
You might be one of them. In a recent survey conducted among 500 students from this year's freshman class, 97.8 percent said they were satisfied
with their decision to attend USC. They also cited great satisfaction in their interactions with faculty, staff, and fellow students.
From the first week you arrive on campus, the university makes a great effort to ensure you're not "just a number." In fact, U.S. News & World
Report's Best Colleges Guide, 2003 recognized USC's pioneering efforts in freshman outreach as #1 for "Programs that Really Work." Over 80
percent of USC freshmen enroll in a course called University 101. This semester-long, three-credit course helps first-year college students make
the transition from high school to college by introducing them to academic resources and campus facilities and traditions. As a freshman at USC,
you also are encouraged to become a member of at least one student organization. There are nearly 300 to choose from! Additionally, there are 120
different intramural sports teams available to those who are athletically inclined.
Though the campus serves 25,000 students, and is a major research institution, it manages to keep its class sizes surprisingly small. The average
class size for introductory lecture courses is fewer than 30 students, 63 percent of courses taken by freshmen have 25 or less students, and only
1.2 percent of courses taken by freshmen have more than 100 students.
Diverse Opportunities
With the University's size comes rich diversity, both in people you'll meet and in program options. While about 78 percent of USC students are South
Carolinians, 22 percent hail from 49 states and more than 100 other countries! The USC experience provides plenty of opportunities to meet new
people and to expand your horizons. And if you want to explore beyond the borders of Columbia, South Carolina, the world is yours. USC has study abroad
programs with more than 50 institutions in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and the Far East.
Fantastic Facilities
When students visit our campus for the first time they usually comment on how beautiful the campus is. USC has been described as one of the most
beautiful college campuses in America. Nestled in the heart of campus are restored nineteenth century buildings shaded by ancient oaks. The campus
extends 35 city blocks from the center and is comprised of contemporary facilities in landscaped settings. Some brand new buildings are bringing
lots of excitement to campus this year. Carolina Center, an 18,000-seat arena, just opened last fall. Home of Division 1 SEC Gamecock basketball,
the venue also will bring nationally touring concerts and other events to town on a regular basis. Several blocks away, USC's brand new $40 million
Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center just opened in March. This state-of-the-art facility includes indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor track, ball
courts, a 52-foot climbing wall, an 18,000-square-foot strength and conditioning area, food courts, wireless Internet access, a pro shop, a
whirlpool/sauna, and much more. Come see the campus for yourself! Regularly scheduled or self-guided campus tours may be arranged through the University
of South Carolina Visitor Center at www.sc.edu/visitor.
Many Majors and Degree Programs
USC offers students more than 70 undergraduate majors ranging from traditional disciplines to technical and professional areas of study. Highly
motivated, exceptional students find a distinctive educational niche in the University's South Carolina Honors Collegerated one of the best in the
United States. The University is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral
degrees. For a complete listing of the University's majors, please visit the Web at www.sc.edu/admissions.
