About The University of New England
It’s easy to make the case for attending college in southern Maine. The people are friendly and welcoming and the coastal area has a long history as a popular vacation destination. It’s a beautiful, livable part of the country and a wonderful place to spend your college years. The University of New England has two campuses: the University Campus in Biddeford, Maine and the University’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland, Maine. Both campuses offer their own uniqueness in a beautiful southern Maine setting.
The University Campus in Biddeford encompasses more than 540 acres and has more than 4,000 feet of ocean frontage. Among its 22 buildings is the new 80,000-sq. ft. Harold Alfond Center for Sciences; the Campus Center, which includes a recreational/fitness center, a gymnasium, and a swimming pool that’s accessible to people with disabilities; and the Jack S. Ketchum Library. The university has completed the construction of a $7.5-million Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Center and Research Facility this year. The university campus is nine miles from Kennebunkport, and 1 ½ hours from Boston, Massachusetts and the Mt. Washington Valley of New Hampshire.
UNE’s 41-acre Westbrook College Campus offers access to the urban resources and cultural activities of Portland, Maine’s largest city. Appealing in its own right-it’s been designated a national historic district-the campus features notable architecture, recently updated facilities and technologies, and a pleasing small-college environment.
You can choose UNE with full confidence that you’ll find strong, career-focused programs across the curriculum. Our programs are exceptionally high quality and admission is reasonably competitive. Our philosophy of education and student life places emphasis on the quality of instruction and on the practical application of academic material. You’ll have access to outstanding clinical and internship experiences throughout the region and around the world. UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine offers many opportunities for research in the medical fields, and UNE’s affiliation with the highly respected Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine also offers students internships with some of the top scientists in America. Internships, co-ops, and clinicals all add up to the practical experience that allows students at UNE to apply the skills learned in the classroom to real job situations.
The men and women who teach at UNE are an experienced group of people, with more than 85 percent earning the highest degree in their field. They are highly competent, demanding, concerned, accessible, and willing to give individual attention to students. The match between what our faculty has to offer and what our students need and expect is key to the rare educational environment at the University of New England. A recent accreditation report stated that, “while many small institutions believe in individual attention, UNE does it.”
