University of Guelph

The city of Guelph, named in 1827 after King George IV (pronounced gwelf, rhymes with self) is located in southern Ontario, the region the New York Times calls “Canada’s Technology Triangle,” a locale known for its high-caliber educational institutions and its innovative companies. This city of almost 100,000 is positioned within an hour’s drive of Toronto. Guelph offers the comfort of small-community living with the excitement of an international metropolis at its doorstep.

The University of Guelph is ranked as one of the best comprehensive universities in Canada by Maclean’s magazine (Canada’s equivalent of U.S. News & World Report). This ranking reflects Guelph’s distinctiveness as a high-quality, student-focused, residentially intensive university that is committed to creative programs, dynamic student-faculty interaction, and an integration of learning and research.

The University of Guelph was established in 1964 when the founding colleges—Ontario Veterinary College (1862), Ontario Agricultural College (1874), and Macdonald Institute (1930) joined with a new college of arts and science to create the diverse institution, balancing high-tech research and vigorous theatre and fine arts programs, that exists today. We offer 12 undergraduate degree programs with 90 different majors and over 75 graduate programs.

We are renowned both for excellence in teaching and world-class research strengths in food, biotechnology, communities and families, health and well-being, culture and society, advanced analysis, and environments. Guelph’s faculty members have won more than 100 major awards for their teaching and 21 are fellows of the Royal Society, reflecting outstanding scholarly achievement.

The University of Guelph, a selective comprehensive institution, is a place where teaching and research go hand-in-hand. We offer high-quality, prestigious, undergraduate programs to 12,337 undergraduate students and are the second most research intensive university in Canada, with more than $100 million in research funding and 1,700 graduate students. We attract the very best students, with the highest average entering grades among comprehensive universities in Canada. At almost 90 percent, our graduation rate is also the highest among comprehensive universities; and more than 97 percent of Guelph students are employed within two years of graduation.

American students interesting in applying to the University of Guelph must present a minimum GPA of 3.0 and combined SAT score of 1100 or ACT score of 24.

Our students know how to have fun too! Guelph offers over 100 student clubs and organizations, two student newspapers and a radio station. Seven thousand students participate in club or intramural sports. Our varsity University of Guelph “Gyphons” compete on 30 intercollegiate teams including championship football, hockey, rugby, and cross-country.

Guelph has one of the largest and best-established university housing systems in Canada —with accommodation for over 5,000 students. All U.S. high school applicants are guaranteed on-campus residence for their first year if they apply by the deadline date.

The living and learning environment found at the University of Guelph compares with those found at outstanding private universities in the United States, with one important difference—U. of G. boasts a competitive tuition that will surprise you. So take some time to visit the Web sites of our academic departments and read about the courses we offer. We’re sure you’ll find a degree program to interest you—which is fully transportable to the United States.

Over 3,000 U. of G. alumni live and work in the United States like John Kenneth Galbraith (former presidential advisor to John F. Kennedy), Roberta Bondar (payload specialist on the 1992 shuttle Discovery), and Peter May (designer of the computer-generated dinosaurs for the film Jurassic Park).

We invite you to explore our world and learn why so many student thrive at Guelph!
