Overview
Simon's Rock is a college for inspired students determined to take control of their own education after the 10th or 11th grade of traditional high school, Of the several fine early entrance programs in the United States, it is the oldest, largest and the only one devoted exclusively to high school age students. The admission staff looks for students who show evidence of a lively intellect, sustained achievement, and scholarly potential. The college awards the AA and BA in the liberal arts and sciences.
Location
Located 140 miles from both Boston and New York City, the college is located on 200 wooded acres just west of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts Tanglewood. This area is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jacob's Pillow, the Berkshire Opera Company, and many other arts organizations that make their home in nearby towns. Great Barrington is a thriving business community with a variety of schools and service organizations in which Simon's Rock students work and volunteer.
Facilities
Many new facilities have been built on the campus since 1998, including a 58,000-square-foot athletic center and the Fisher Science Center that houses the biology, chemistry, ecology and physics departments. New dormitories received Internet connectivity between 2000 and 2002 and a new, spacious, top-of-the-line 82-bed dormitory was also recently constructed. Ground was broken in summer, 2002 for a $10 million performing and visual arts complex.
Student Life
Social life on campus is as varied as the people who attend the Rock. On any weekend, groups of students might be working at Habitat for Humanity; planning a dance at the Student Union; going bouldering, climbing or caving; paddling on the river for an ecology study project; running into Boston for a play or a concert; eating out in Great Barrington (fantastic restaurants!); or just hanging out with friends. With an enrollment of 390, students speak passionately about the sense of community that develops among them during their stay at Simon's Rock. Many alumni report that they formed lifelong friendships while attending Simon's Rock.
During their first two years at the college, students are required to complete a core curriculum that includes cultural perspective seminars, arts, mathematics, natural science, and foreign language. Some students transfer to another four year institution after completing the requirements for the AA degree; those who wish to stay at Simon's Rock for their BA must apply for admission through a process called Moderation. Candidates for the BA must complete a senior thesis, which counts for eight credits and usually takes a full academic year to complete.
Admissions
Simon's Rock seeks students who demonstrate the intellectual ability, motivation, and self-discipline to pursue college studies while they are still in early adolescence. A personal interview is required of each applicant. In addition to the interview, the college requires written essays, two letters of recommendation, a high school transcript, standardized test scores, and a parent's statement. International students are required to submit TOEFL scores. |
