The Continuing Story of Life University
When Life Chiropractic College opened its doors on January 20, 1975, just 22 pioneering students gathered in rented warehouse space to begin what would become one of the great success stories of higher education.
It soon became clear that Life was the answer to a pressing need. Enrollment surged and the institution began to develop beyond the confines of a professional school offering a single degree. As the college grew, other needs and opportunities presented themselves, and plans to offer degrees in the broader educational spectrum were developed and brought to fruition.
The institution's name and charter were changed in 1989 from Life Chiropractic College to Life College to more accurately encompass the continuing expansion of the degree program offerings. In 1997, the State of Georgia granted Life the status of a university in recognition of its development into a diverse and multi-faceted institution.
Today Life is home to the world's largest College of Chiropractic. The DC program has been joined by the School of Arts and Sciences which includes both undergraduate and graduate programs.
In addition to its College of Chiropractic, the School of Arts and Sciences provides a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs in business, nutrition, dietetics, and the sciences, as well as several associate's degree programs. There is also a Master of Science degree in Sport Health Science.
Over the years, Life has developed active research relationships with Costa Rica, Kenya, Senegal, the Republic of South Korea, People's Republic of China, Egypt, and many other countries.
Life University has gained international recognition in the area of research as well. The World Health Organization (WHO) named Life University the only worldwide coordinating center to study the use of chiropractic care for low back pain. Life was also designated the Global Data Collection Center for the entire initiative The university's research findings along with clinical data obtained from all the coordinating centers worldwide was analyzed using computer programs developed by Life.
Life and the WHO have also followed up with a research effort into the global burden of the subluxation.
The profession of chiropractic has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with the world of athletics. High performance competitors in many sports recognize that the chiropractic adjustment can help them achieve peak performance. In many nations around the world chiropractic has been introduced first through athletes seeking to improve their own physical performance.
Today athletes and coaches from other nations now travel to the United States to participate in the Dynamic Essentials of Lasting Peak Performance program at Life University. Multi-national teams of athletes will be able to train using the university's world-class facilities in Marietta and receive instruction from the top experts in their field. Life University's International Sports Training Institute has been approved by Olympic Solidarity as a Center for Coaching Excellence. |
