About
LaGrange College
Founded in 1831, LaGrange
College is the oldest private college in Georgia. A four-year liberal
arts and sciences college affiliated with the United Methodist Church,
the college is located in a residential section of LaGrange, Georgia,
which has a population of 30,000. The city is home to Fortune 500 companies,
unique shops and restaurants, and historic landmarks. Nearby are the world-famous
Callaway Gardens, the Warm Springs Foundation, West Point Lake, and Franklin
D. Roosevelt's Little White House.
Located approximately
65 miles southwest of Atlanta, LaGrange College boasts a total enrollment
of about 1015 students, representing 19 states and 11 foreign countries,
and offers 39 academic and pre-professional programs. This diversity,
coupled with an average class size of 11, provides for rewarding intellectual
stimulation both inside and outside the classroom. Teaching such small
groups enables professors to provide both a challenging and supportive
learning environment.
Challenging the mind
is a priority at LaGrange College. Providing a background in the natural
and social sciences, arts, and humanities, its Core Program in the liberal
arts assists students in seeing how subjects interrelate while developing
the research and problem-solving skills employers and grad schools seek
most. LaGrange is also the only school in Georgia that operates on the
4-1-4 academic calendar. Under this system, students normally take four
courses during the fall and spring terms. During our January interim term,
students either take one course, intern with a company or organization,
or travel abroad to such locations as Ecuador, Italy, Greece, the United
Kingdom, or Spain.
Students at the college
have access to outstanding amenities and facilities, many of which have
been completed or renovated in the last several years. Recent building
projects have included the Callaway Academic Building, Manget Building,
softball complex, baseball field, and the student commons. Fall 2002 marks
the opening of two new apartment-style residence halls as well as work
on a new student center and the beginning of renovations to Boatwright
Residence Hall. All buildings on campus, including dorm rooms and "smart"
classrooms, are connected through a campus-wide fiber-optic network providing
free Internet access.
Affiliated with The
United Methodist Church, LaGrange College seeks to inspire students to
grow in all ways, not just academically. Students become involved in service
projects, Habitat for Humanity, after-school youth programs, and mission
trips to such locations as Haiti and the Czech Republic. More than 30
student organizations are available on campus, including fraternities,
sororities, religious groups, and service clubs. A provisional member
of NCAA Division III, the college fields teams in 14 intercollegiate sports
as a member of the Great South Athletic Conference. Its athletic facilities
include three gyms, ten tennis courts, a lighted soccer field, and a natatorium,
as well as a new baseball field and expanded softball complex. In addition
to intercollegiate competition, intramural athletic opportunities abound.
