Jackson State University

History
Founded 125 years ago as a small college to train ministers and teachers under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Society, Jackson State University is Mississippi’s urban, comprehensive university with more than 7,500 students. A coeducational institution located in Jackson, Mississippi, JSU is supported by state legislative appropriations, which are supplemented by student fees and private grants.

Overview
Designated by the Carnegie Melon Foundation as a research-intensive university, JSU offers more than 88 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs.

Jackson State University’s instructional program is comprised of highly qualified faculty members who also serve as academic advisors and are engaged in community service and research. The student/faculty ratio is approximately 28:1. The university provides leadership to and assistance with west Jackson community’s revitalization and economic development through its e-City initiative. Through its academic programs, students are receiving contemporary education that empowers them to achieve career success and serve their communities in a technologically complex world. Academic programs are complemented in several ways, including summer programs for high school students, distance learning courses, the Division of Undergraduate Studies (provides academic support for new students), the Honors Program (for academically outstanding students), and multi-disciplinary research centers.

Activities
Student life is also a major factor in university life. Many programs and services are provided to smooth the transition to Jackson State and to support success inside and outside the classroom, including high school and community college programs, visiting student scholars programs, Admission and Financial Aid Day, tutors and group study sessions, counseling and assistance for disabled students, internship/co-op and job counseling and placement, academic exchange programs, study abroad, and cultural programs and excursions.

Extracurricular activities include student government, clubs and organizations, assemblies, community service opportunities, student publications, fraternities and sororities, and other interest specific recreational activities.

Facilities
The main campus is located in west Jackson, Mississippi, encompassing almost 173 acres with 42 buildings. Comfortable campus housing is provided for undergraduate students via seven residence centers, and privatized housing is located near to the main campus.

The Margaret Walker Alexander National Research Center is a cultural preservation resource that houses significant archival records, collects living memories and personal papers, and interprets the African-American experience through symposia, conference, and festivals.

Accreditation
Jackson State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the bachelor’s, master’s, education specialist, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Some notable JSU alumni include Roderick Paige, U.S. Secretary of Education; Lindsey Hunter, National Basketball Association; Lem Barney and Walter Payton, National Football League Hall of Fame; Cassandra Wilson, jazz vocalist; and Vivian Brown, meteorologist on the Weather Channel.
