Bradley Uses Scholarship to Immerse Himself in Mexican Culture
Dan Bradley, a resident of Langhorne and a junior at Arcadia University, earned a Gilman scholarship to fund his semester studying in Mexico through Arcadia's Center for Education Abroad.
Bradley got the spark for studying abroad from Arcadia Spanish professor Tom Fleming, who convinced Bradley of the need to learn more about the world. His sister Kathleen touted her trips to Spain, France, and Italy and suggested international study to her younger brother.
"Tom said that, as a person of the world, I needed to learn to speak another language," Bradley says. "The best way to do that was to immerse myself in another culture."
He chose Mexico, despite the fact that he "hardly knew anything about the country" and spent the spring 2004 semester there. He says that while he knew Spanish from high school and courses at Arcadia, "I had a lot of grammar in my head but had trouble speaking and listening," says Bradley, a 2002 graduate of Father Judge High School in Northeast Philadelphia. "After a couple of weeks, I became comfortable speaking in classes, and in a few months I was no longer embarrassed about how I sounded and was able to hold longer and more complex conversations." Now he thinks Mexico could be a place to live after graduation. "The people are so great there," says Bradley. "They were patient with me speaking Spanish and really encouraged me. And families are so important in the culture, people take care of each other, and I really liked that."
Bradley plans to return to Guadalajara to see friends and to delve further into the language by taking higher-level courses. To fulfill his scholarship obligations, Bradley will tutor Spanish-speaking students in the School District of Philadelphia, thanks to a partnership set up by Dr. Ned Wolff, an Arcadia math professor.
Gilman Award winners are Pell Grant recipients who have significant hurdles in studying abroad. Often, these scholars select countries other than Western Europe or Australia. Another Arcadia student, Susan Sendall, received the award in 2004 and will spend a semester in Equatorial Guinea.
