Search Your School's Web Site

So now you're off to school. You've done the campus tour, applied, filled out your FAFSA, sent in your housing and tuition deposits, and are now ready to hit your school's campus with a bang. But what should you expect when you set off to campus? One way to learn more about your school is to look it up on the Internet. If you aren't sure of your school's url, your should first try doing a keyword search on Yahoo! or Google. A lot of academic urls end in ".edu" rather than ".com," so try entering the school's abbreviation followed by ".edu" in your Web browser's window. Then give the site a thorough search. Below you will find some of the issues you might want to know more about:
Academics:
What classes are offered?
What schools/majors are there to choose from?
Can you see the list of departments?
What classes are required for each major?
Are there any departments/fields the school is known for?
Can you read about the faculty?
Can you e-mail/call the faculty if you have any questions?
Activities:

What clubs and organizations are there on campus?
Is there a recreation center? Swimming pool? Golf course
How is the campus safety?
Can you find out more about Greek life?
How can you join a religious organization?
Is there a theater organization?
Housing:
Where can you live?
Are there residence life activities?
Are there campus-owned apartment complexes or houses?
What do the dining facilities offer you?
Is there cable TV in the dorms?
Where are the dorms located?
Athletics:
Where are the athletic fields?
Are sporting event tickets free for students?
How can you get tickets?
How can you get involved in athletics?
Where can you find out more about intramural teams and club sports?
Financial Aid:
How can you apply for financial aid?
Where is the bursar's office?
How can you find out more about grants and loans?
What kinds of scholarships does your school offer?
Are there any work-study jobs available?
What other kinds of work programs does your school offer?
What do you do about refunds/repayments from your financial aid awards?
Where do you go if you have questions about your financial aid package?
