College students are one of the nation’s largest uninsured populations.
According to a 1997 study conducted by the Independent Insurance Agents of America and College Parents of America, nearly one in seven college students is without health insurance.

Through Digital Insurance, college students can purchase Student Select health insurance coverage from Fortis Health in 34 states, as well as short-term coverage from Fortis Health in 42 states. Individual medical coverage is available in 40 states plus the District of Columbia. Students can consider all of the options available and select a plan that is right for them.
- Student Select health—Student Select is renewable individual health insurance designed for undergraduate and graduate college students. This plan focuses on the single student no longer covered under a parents’ health plan, lives outside a parents’ HMO or PPO area, or is considering a college-sponsored plan. Whereas most college plans only cover until graduation or very shortly thereafter, students can renew Student Select as long as they need it. Student Select guarantees acceptance to any eligible student—any undergraduate (taking nine or more college credits) or full-time graduate student attending an accredited college or university. Student Select also covers for the entire year and is transferable.
- Short term—Short Term Medical is a temporary health insurance plan that offers coverage for 30–185 days. In addition to the length of coverage, short-term coverage allows a choice of doctors, as well as deductible amount and rate of payment for office visits—all which may vary depending on the state.
- Individual medical—Individuals can purchase HMO and PPO network plans that are flexible enough to allow an individual to not only see any doctor, but also find additional cost-savings when visiting a doctor in the participating HMO or PPO network. There’s also the traditional indemnity plan that has no network. In exchange for this freedom of choice, there may be higher monthly premiums. The higher the deductible and co-payments, the more an individual saves.
- Individual dental—You can also purchase individual dental coverage where you will have access to dental that gives you the freedom to choose any dentist, but save money if you select a dentist within the network.
With so many choices, the process can be confusing. With Digital Insurance, convenient online access does not mean a lack of customer service. Students can contact Digital Insurance’s customer service center, which is staffed by licensed health insurance professionals by phone, e-mail, or online chat.
