Siblings Anchor Arcadia Soccer Teams

Tom and Maria DeGeorge, siblings from Northeast Philadelphia, are the best men's and women's soccer players at Arcadia University. The duo led the Knights to the conference playoffs, with the men winning the championship and advancing to the national quarterfinals.

Tom, a senior history major, is not only one of the top players at Arcadia, he is one of the best in the nation. Last year, DeGeorge was an honorable mention All-American as he led the team in scoring and assists and helped the Knights into the third round of the NCAA tournament. This year, he had 18 goals and 11 assists to lead Arcadia, which was 20-4 overall and 8-0 in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference; for his performance, DeGeorge became Arcadia's first first-team All-American.

"Tom is the player to watch every time out and every team we play is gearing up to try to stop him," says Arcadia men's coach Tom Carlin. "He makes everyone on the team better with his tremendous technical ability, and more importantly, his lead-by-example attitude."

Maria made quite an impact in just her freshman year. The Archbishop Ryan graduate had nine goals, one shy of the team lead, and a team-high 14 assists for the Knights, who have won three of the last five PAC championships.

"Maria is perhaps the most likeable player on our team, with a positive attitude, great personality, and high work ethic that make her even more valuable to our team and university," says Arcadia women's coach Art Goon. "Maria has been one of three freshmen who have made an immediate impact on our program this season. She, along with Diana Zeminski and Amy Franks, has blended exceptionally well with our upperclassmen to get us back to the PAC playoffs. She is one of those rare players who comes along every so often who makes everyone around her better players."

Both Tom and Maria like having the other on campus, and the two frequently meet for lunch, rides home, and on the soccer field.

"It's fun to watch her play," says Tom. "I'm glad she's here; I'd rather have her here than someplace else."

Maria was worried about comparisons with her older brother. "I didn't want to be known as his little sister but it helped me here because people knew him and liked him," she says. "I didn't want people to think I was as good as my brother because I'm not."

Having both of them at Arcadia also made life easier for their parents, Tom and Donna. The women's team frequently played before the men on Saturday afternoons.

"They didn't miss a game," Tom says of his parents. "I know that it is good for them to be able to come and see us both play." When there is a conflict, they watched the men's team play, which Maria encouraged them to do since it was Tom's senior season.
