Arcadia Partners with Penn and USP to Target Students Underrepresented in Majors and Fields

Arcadia University, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), has received a $677,159 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO Dissemination Partnership Grant. The program works to encourage income-eligible and first-generation college students, along with students from groups historically underrepresented in graduate school, to expand their educational opportunities and pursue graduate studies.

Penn sought the funds in order to disseminate the practices and experiences of its highly successful Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program with two partner institutions and two state agencies, the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) and the Act 101 Program of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Members of Congress funded the McNair Scholars Program in honor of Dr. Ronald McNair, who was killed in the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle disaster.

"We want to prepare these students for postgraduate work and give them the skills they will need to succeed," says Aisha Amin, project coordinator and Act 101 Counselor at Arcadia. "It is not easy to earn a Ph.D., and this program will provide them with the resources and assistance needed to make that journey."

Amin, along with faculty coordinator Dr. Carlos Ortiz, will identify five to eight rising sophomores who meet the program's economic and race/gender requirements. These students will receive additional training, including a faculty mentor, internship opportunities, research training, career counseling, preparation for graduate entry exams, and a spot in Arcadia's summer research institute.

Penn currently has a well-established TRIO program, and through this partnership, will assist at Arcadia and USP in developing practices, strategies, and activities at their institutions as a way of placing more "TRIO-like" students on the road to a doctoral degree, ultimately diversifying the face of the professorate. Amin indicates that Arcadia's campus is ready for this unique and highly interactive partnership. "Penn is the older sibling helping us along," she says. "They are willing to guide us and allow us to learn from their expertise and better utilize our staff and human resources."

Arcadia University is a coeducational, comprehensive university in suburban Philadelphia, offering undergraduate and graduate study to 3,000 students annually.
