Air Force Guardsman Earns Success on the Tennis Courts
For Arcadia University junior Katie Detwiler, a native of Pen Argyl and a 2001 graduate of Pen Argyl High School, the pressure of the 2003 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships hardly registered. After all, just three months prior, she was sweltering in a chemical suit in the hot Kuwaiti desert while working as a fuel cell technician in the United States Air Force.
Detwiler spent four months in Kuwait as a member of the National Guard. She missed her Fall 2002 semester while going through field tech school and then had to leave her spring semester early to be part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. "It definitely helped me to be able to put things in better perspective," she says. "I remember how nervous I was my first year at the tournament. It was nice to be calmer this time. I had no worries."
On the court, Detwiler and her teammates started the season in a rocky fashion as injuries and personal situations kept the squad from having all of its players. But Detwiler thought the team eventually did itself proud. She did too, earning second-team all-conference at number three singles. "We came together toward the end of the season when we needed to pick up our game," she says.
Although it seems like her academic path has been filled with obstacles, Detwiler is still on track, thanks to keeping in contact with her professors. "They have been wonderful," she says. "One professor even gave me a packet of information, and whenever I could get to a computer, I would send work back to her." She is adding another international experience to her resume by studying in Australia through Arcadia's Center for Education Abroad. "I had to get special permission from my commander, and they gave it to me with honors," she says. "I am really proud of that."
An interior design major, Detwiler is unsure if the military is her future. However, she says, "It is definitely an option." Her father, Don, is also in the Air Force National Guard and trains at Willow Grove the same weekend that Katie does.
