East Stroudsburg Resident Reaches Semifinals of Prestigious Screenwriting Contest
Arcadia University student Matthew Berry, a resident of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, advanced to the semifinal round of the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition, sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Matthew's screenplay was one of 158 selected out of more than 6,000 entries.
Matthew's screenplay took nearly three years to write and focuses on the Congolese Civil War of the late 1990sa primitive battle over the trading of the mineral coltan, which is used as a semi-conductor in high-tech electronics. Matthew was struck by the dichotomy of the situation.
"Here was a brutal war fueling technology; it's such a juxtaposition," says Matthew.
The Nicholl Fellowship contest, in its 18th year, helped spawn the careers of Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Mike Rich (Finding Forrester). A total of 78 fellowships have been presented.
After graduating from East Stroudsburg High School in 1997, Matthew took three years off to research and write his screenplay. After spending two years at Moravian College, Matthewa math major interested in engineeringtransferred to Arcadia this summer.
"I like the idea of using film to communicate a social message," he says.
Matthew, the son of Rosemary and William and brother of Chris Berry, already has an idea for a second script, which is a requirement for entry into the Nicholl contest.
